The French number one (14th in the world) lost in four sets (1-6, 6-2, 3-6, 2-6) against world number two Alexander Zverev. Not without being unworthy in his first round of 16 in Melbourne.
Ugo Humbert stops there. After having dispatched the first set in less than thirty minutes (6-1), Alexander Zverev, untouchable at the start of the match, was manhandled for a set and a half by the French number one. Messin brilliantly went for the second act (6-2) thanks to a double break. Enough to make the colossus of Hamburg tremble a little, suddenly feverish. But Jérémy Chardy's student experienced a fatal drop in performance at the end of the 3rd act. The German snatched the break against a 14th in the world who was down on first serves and who became tense in the 8th game of the 2nd act. Surprised by a short cross return from Zverev, Humbert sent his forehand into the net. Zverev took advantage before rolling out in the 4th. Three months after being corrected by “Sascha” at Bercy in the final (6-2, 6-2) of the Rolex Paris Masters, the French number one held up better but the step was still too high.
The world number two will face Tommy Paul (11th) in the quarterfinals, in a tournament in which he reached the semi-finals twice, in 2020 and in 2024. Humbert was not unworthy but fell against someone stronger than him. Messin tried to resist the power of the German, like his successful second set, but gave in at length (2h19 of match), therefore stopping at the gates of the quarter-finals. “Ugo is a player who has improved enormously in recent months and I am very happy to have beaten him. I am very happy with my match tonight”declared Zverev directly into the microphone of his compatriot Andrea Petkovic. “I think he has a very good chance of entering the top 10 very soon.“added Zverev.
-After losing to Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz in the round of 16 at Wimbledon in 2019 and 2024, the 26-year-old left-hander lost for the third time at this stage of Grand Slam competition.
