LThe procession never ends. In the winding streets of the small fishing port of Trinité-sur-Mer, in Morbihan, the procession from à-Dieu to the native of the country, Jean-Marie Le Pen, sculls. On the sidewalks and at the windows, onlookers mingle with the faithful of the founder of the National Front, who died Tuesday January 7 at the age of 96. Under a big blue sky, we applaud as the hearse passes, followed on foot by the three daughters of the deceased: Marine, Marie-Caroline and Yann Le Pen.

To the point of drowning out in places the sound of the Bignou and the Cornemuse, played by musicians in traditional clothes, accompanying with a Breton air the walk from the Saint-Joseph church to the cemetery. The only ones invited to the religious ceremony officiated by the parish priest, the two hundred members of the family and the first circle of friends were able to listen to the Gospel of the Beatitudes before singing, among the religious songs selected by Marion Maréchal, the hymn to Sainte-Anne, patroness of the Bretons.

As proof, it is none other than the 2002 presidential poster, in black and white, that the family chose to illustrate its mass booklet as well as a biographical booklet distributed to the faithful present. Both concluded with the favorite mantra of the former nationalist figurehead: “The future always begins tomorrow”.

Before arriving at the vault, all the families and generations of the Front which became the National Rally were surprised to find themselves, like this, shoulder to shoulder. Co-founder and former vice-president of the National Front, Alain Jamet, 90, is there. The young boss of the RN, Jordan Bardella, 29 years old, too.

“Death, even the enemy has the right to respect”

Marie-Christine Arnautu, Bruno Gollnisch and Huguette Fatna, formerly Jean-Marie Le Pen’s first lieutenants, rub shoulders with those close to Marine Le Pen. MEP Gilles Pennelle or the MP for Pas-de-, Bruno Bilde, in particular. While the senator from follows – having left the RN for Éric Zemmour during the last presidential election – Stéphane Ravier, as well as the RN deputy from , Frédéric Boccaletti… Among the two hundred guests, almost as many anonymous people join the procession over the hours. Bernard Boiché, in his sixties, is one of them. An early activist for Jean-Marie Le Pen, he will have traveled 2,800 kilometers over the weekend, the round trip from Beaucaire in the , to be there. “I couldn’t imagine not saying goodbye to him,” he says.

Around twenty radical skinhead-style activists, some with their faces hidden, also managed to make their way between the large police force. But without creating an incident. Otherwise, for one of them, to be roundly bullied and then chased away by the MEP and brother-in-law of Marine Le Pen, Philippe Olivier, for having displayed a French flag surmounted by a Celtic cross, a sign of rallying of small fascist groups. To the great relief of the organizers, no left-wing political or associative demonstrations disrupted the ceremony. Due, in particular, to an impressive deployment of law enforcement, including more than a hundred gendarmes and CRS mobilized.

“When presenting his condolences, Emmanuel Macron assured Marine Le Pen that the necessary means would be put in place so that the serenity of the family is respected,” says a close friend of Jean-Marie Le Pen’s daughter. As if echoing the words slipped by the Head of State to the government, during the last Council of Ministers: “Death, even the enemy has the right to respect. »
