The spin-off series NCIS : Origins has lifted the veil on one of the best-kept mysteries in the NCIS universe, shedding light on one of the murkiest parts of Special Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs’ past.
Since its creation in 2003, NCIS: Special Investigations has established itself as a major television franchise, with more than a thousand episodes under the clock, and no less than five spin-off series (and a sixth NCIS: Tony & Zivain preparation for 2025). Among these spin-offs are NCIS : Los Angeles, NCIS: New Orleans et NCIS : Hawai’i. Lifetime NCIS: Guantanamo.
Recently, CBS launched NCIS : Originsa prequel exploring Gibbs’ beginnings in the 1990s. Mark Harmon, the iconic actor playing Gibbs, expressed his enthusiasm for this new series, particularly for the choice of Austin Stowell in the role of young Gibbs. In an episode recently broadcast in the United States, NCIS : Origins revealed one of Gibbs’ deepest secrets, unraveling a mystery the franchise has dragged on for two decades.
NCIS: The End of the Gibbs Secret
In episode 9 of the first season of NCIS : Originstitled « Dead or Alive »light is shed on how Gibbs tracked down and eliminated Pedro Hernandez, the man responsible for the deaths of his wife and daughter. This quest for revenge, long mentioned in the original series, takes shape here, showing Gibbs ready to do anything to obtain justice.
With the help of information provided by his mentor, Mike Franks (Kyle Schmid), Gibbs travels to Mexico, posing as a sniper in order to execute Hernandez. What we suspected since Gibbs’ debut in the main series is therefore confirmed: he has indeed crossed the red line to carry out his revenge, putting his duty as an agent second.
Afterwards, Gibbs’ colleague Lala Dominguez (Mariel Molino) and Mike Franks realize they have been duped. The trust they had placed in Gibbs was betrayed by him, and the atmosphere within the NIS (future NCIS) deteriorated sharply.. The future of the special agent within the structure has since been uncertain. We obviously know that he will continue his career within the special unit.
However, the disclosure of this secret in NCIS : Origins helped add a new dimension to Gibbs’ character, making him less smooth than he was at the start of the series. NCIS : Origins is currently airing on CBS in the United States. The first season of the series will consist of 18 episodes, and it is not known when it will be broadcast in France.
