the Prime Video series does a service to this famous character

He is one of the most mysterious villains in fiction: Sauron, the terrible villain born from the imagination of JRR Tolkienis a source of fascination for fans of the Lord of the Rings. Whether in the novels or in the films of Peter Jackson, the Dark Lord and his many powers intrigue the audience… The Prime Video series takes over this evil being to make him his star, giving him a depth that makes him a more human villain.

Sauron, disciple de Morgoth

Little known, Morgoth, whose secrets we recently revealed to you, is nevertheless the one who perverts Sauron, and shapes him in his image. This antagonist of Lord of the Rings is less popular than his heir for the simple reason that he is absent from Peter Jackson’s films; gold, it is the latter who popularized the work of JRR Tolkien among part of the general public.

Considered as the original source of evil in this fictional universe, Morgoth disappeared after the War of the Great Wrath, which marks the end of the First Age, and after which he is condemned to the Void. This large-scale conflict between Morgoth and the Elves, Men, Dwarves and Valar makes shift Middle-earth into a new erain which Sauron grew up feeding on the ashes left behind by his predecessor.

The Rings of Power has many flaws, and the author of this article is not unaware of them. However, the Prime Video series can boast of giving depth to Sauron – whether fans of Tolkien’s work consider this deepening consistent with the original material is another question. After advancing masked in the first season, this villain manages to manipulate Celebrimbor in the second season to make him forge several magic rings.

The latter, blinded by the beguiling words of the false master blacksmithwho now calls himself Annatar, and deceived by his serenity spell, works for the future destruction of his people, as well as that of Men and Dwarves. In this human form, Sauron reveals himself much more than in the past of the sagabut also in a way that has little to do with lore. In episode 7 of season 2, Sauron even tells Celebrimbor that Morgoth enslaved him and forced to become evil. A statement invented for the series, in an attempt to make Sauron more human.

The Sauron of Rings of Power has depth… But it’s not Tolkien’s

The season 2 prologue was just crazy.

20 exceptional minutes where we follow Adar’s betrayal towards Mairon (Sauron), and the way in which the latter is reincarnated in a new form, that of Halbrand, until his meeting with Galadriel.

From the opening sequence of season 2, we understand that the Sauron of Rings of Power will not be more like Tolkien’s in these new episodes than in the previous ones. Showrunners Patrick McKay and JD Payne confirm with this scene that Morgoth’s disciple is the “star” of their series, but also thatthey take a parallel path (perpendicular, fans would say) to that of the novelist. At the end of the Silmarillionit is said that the crown of Morgoth was melted to make a necklace, while the latter, his feet cut off, his body chained, was thrown into the infinite void without the possibility of redemption…

In The Rings of Power, Sauron is killed by Adar, who recovers the crown. Changes that are certainly disturbing, even annoying for many fans, but which, failing to be faithful to the Lord of the Ringshave the merit of exploring the character of Sauron. For all neophytes of this fictional universe, the villain is now more accessible, his motivations clearer and more “humane”. Unlike Morgoth, who remains untouchable in the Pantheon of Absolute Evil, Sauron is intelligible, despite the opacity of his shell.

And you, what do you think?
