Nearly 11 million French people voted for candidates from the National Rally and their allies during the first round of early legislative elections which took place last night. The far-right party led by Jordan Bardella came in first with 33.2% of the vote, followed by the left-wing parties of the New Popular Front (28.1%) and those of the presidential majority grouped under the Ensemble banner ( 21%), according to Ipsos-Talan. The participation rate is the highest in 27 years and reached 65.8% in France.

The RN’s historic score can be explained by an electorate “diversified and expanded” according to the Ipsos institute. The RN comes first among retirees with 31% of the vote, among women and among the wealthiest. 57% of workers (12 points more than in 2022) voted for the RN, as well as 44% of employees.

This Monday, Emmanuel Macron is bringing together his government in order to position itself with regard to voting instructions, or instructions to withdraw which could push some of their deputies in the campaign to resign in favour of candidates from other, better placed parties.
