The Minister of Partnership with the Territories Catherine Vautrin confirmed on Tuesday the effort of five billion euros in savings requested from local authorities, which arouses strong opposition from elected officials from all sides. “The reality is that the effort required is five billion”declared the minister on Inter before the opening Tuesday morning in of the Congress of Mayors. For Catherine Vautrin, “we are playing with the sovereignty of the country, we have 3,228 billion euros in debt”.

“We have a sovereignty issue, the idea is to do it with moderation”insisted the Minister of Partnership with the Territories and Decentralization. “Having met the senators, the subject is if we don’t take these five billion from the communities, where do we take them?”she argued.

The mayors meet in a congress from Tuesday in Paris, while anger does not subside despite the government’s attempts to clear mines, in the face of the scale of the budgetary restrictions requested from communities in 2025 to reduce the public deficit.

A contribution of five billion euros is being asked of them out of an overall savings effort of 40 billion euros, but the associations of elected officials estimate the bill at 11 billion euros.
