Outer Banks season 4: what if John B was hiding a secret from us since the start of the Netflix series?

While season 4 ofOuter Banks has just ended with a devastating finale, on Netflix, fans obviously continue to imagine what season 5 could have in store for them. One hypothesis in particular would change the entire history of the Pogues, as we know it.

For four seasons, Outer Banks warmed our hearts with its sunny intrigues and captivating treasure hunts, in the company of the famous Pogues gang. But the last episode of season 4, revealed on November 7, 2024, reshuffled all the cards, leaving us with several tragic revelations. So, while waiting for the fifth and final season of the Netflix series, fans continue to imagine what the future may hold for Sarah, John B, Kiara and the others. One theory in particular could well change our view of the entire narrative ofOuter Banks.

John B, the narrative guide toOuter Banks

If you saw the end of season 4, you already know: the key character of JJ, whose clumsiness has been with us since the beginning, has lost his life. A shocking death which has left all fans in mourning since this traumatic episode was posted online. This conclusion was also the occasion for another revelation, more joyful this time: Sarah and John B are going to have a child together. This information could have an unexpected consequence for the entire series.

Since the beginning of the Pogues’ adventures, John B has been our guide, the narrator of the episodes ofOuter Bankswho fills us with anecdotes and life lessons along the way. A concept that obviously culminated in the season 4 finale, with a poignant monologue about JJ’s death. But is this voice-over really a simple narrative element, intended for the viewer?

A tribute to JJ from the beginning?

According to Screen Rant, fans of the series have a much more attractive theory: John B is actually speaking to his child, the one he is going to have with Sarah. The character in the Netflix series would therefore confide, in the future, to his son or daughter, to whom he recounts his adventures, at length and breadth.

In the first seasons, John B also focused on the description of his life in the Outer Banks, as well as on the importance of family, which would reinforce this hypothesis. Some fans even go further by imagining that this child would be named… JJ, in homage to the missing member of the Pogues.

Several clues, given in season 4, could confirm this theory. When John B announces Sarah’s pregnancy to JJ, he is categorical: the latter will necessarily be the godfather of their child. In episode 9 of season 4, JJ himself jokes that his name would be perfect for a baby, since it can be used for any gender. John B would therefore explain to his child, from the beginning, the origin of his name.

If this were the case, this twist would completely modify our vision of the series as well as its construction, especially since the creators ofOuter Banks have always claimed that they knew exactly how the Pogues story would end. We will therefore inevitably have to take out the tissues to say goodbye to Sarah, John B, Kiara and all these characters that we love so much.
