And according to some fans, a very important concept of lore of League of Legends could finally make its triumphant entry into animated production.
Adapting a video game to the screen has always been an extremely risky bet. But if a particular production has risen to the challenge with flying colors, that’s good. Arcane. Derived from League of Legendsthe Netflix animated series is one of the best on the streaming platform, all genres combined. It must be said that the heartbreaking story of the two sisters Vi and Jinx immediately touched our hearts.
And their adventures in the streets of Zaun and Piltover are coming to an end, with a highly anticipated season 2, the first three episodes of which were released online on November 9, 2024, on Netflix. The opportunity to rediscover these characters that we love so much, but also to spot surprising nods to League of Legends. So what happened in episode 3? Arcane will it finally introduce the famous Nothingness, well known to fans of the game?
Warning, the rest of this article contains spoilers for the first three episodes of season 2 ofArcane.
Hextech: blessing or curse?
In season 1 ofArcanetwo technological advances were particularly highlighted: Shimmer, a purple drug used in the underworld of Zaun, but especially Hextech, a kind of blue magic which crowns Piltover as the City of Progress, thanks to numerous inventions imagined by Jayce and Viktor, two scientists full of hope. But this development comes at a price. Season 1 showed us the damage caused by Hextech on Viktor, notably causing the death of one of his colleagues.
In the new episodes, now available on Netflix, this technology takes on a whole new dimension. Since Viktor was seriously injured during Jinx’s attack, in the final episode of season 1, Jayce decides to use the Hextech heart, a magic capable of evolving by itself, to save him. Viktor then develops mysterious new powers, allowing him to rejuvenate the inhabitants of Zaun.
But that’s not all. In Episode 3 of Season 2, Jayce discovers what looks suspiciously like a transformed version of the Hextech Heart, along with Ekko and Heimerdinger. But is this revelation really what we believe?
Will Nothingness arrive in Arcane ?
Attentive fans of League of Legends have thus noticed that this Hextech core has many similarities with a key concept in video games: Nothingness (or Void in original language). This destructive entity invades the universe of LoL gradually gaining ground, just as the Hextech heart took possession of Viktor’s body, with mysterious effects seen on the great tree of Zaun. Nothingness, like the technology shown in Arcaneare also evolving, are deeply connected to the color violet, and sometimes manifest in the form of strange transparent webs.
The introduction of Void would constitute a major development for Arcanedrawing again on the lore of League of Legends to develop its plot. But the series should not have its eyes bigger than its stomach: if the concept of Nothingness is fascinating, it is above all extremely vast. And season 2 must already resolve a lot of issues, without having to add another layer with an organism that engulfs everything in its path, and which could therefore destroy Piltover and Zaun at the same time. Let’s hope that the production of the Fortiche studio does not get lost along the way.
