If you thought that House of the Dragon was a way for HBO to say a real goodbye to the universe of Game of Thrones, make no mistake, the channel has not yet said its last word. After concluding the narrative arcs of Jon Snow, Daenerys Targaryen and Tyrion Lannister, the American company aims to tell other parts of the history of Westeros alongside new characters.
Under the leadership of George RR Martin, several series are currently in development, some are progressing better than others. This is the case of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms which offers a first image as well as an officialization of filming. In a press release, Max announced that all the teams had traveled to Belfast in Ireland to launch hostilities. But what do we know about the project?
When Chevalier meets the initiatory fable
After Fire and Blood, HBO is tackling another appendage of Iron Throne de George R.R. Martin. The channel intends to adapt The Adventures of Dunk and the Egg. Cet set of short novels focuses on two characters far from the intrigues of the crown. Ninety years before the death of Robert Baratheonthe Targaryen line is still on the throne and the memory of the last dragons has not yet faded from memory.
The collection opens with the news The Knight Errant, which tells the story of a young squire in the service of an old knight who has just died on the way to a prestigious tournament. This twist of fate will change the trajectory of young Dunk. He dons the armor of his late master and now calls himself Ser Duncan the Great. During the tournament, he tries to save a puppeteer from the wrath of Aerion the Blazing and finds himself in a delicate position. It is thanks to the intervention of very young Egg (Oeuf in French) that the hero manages to get out of this bad situation.
The beginnings of the story are reminiscent of a forgotten medieval film, Chevalier with Heath Leadger who also saw a squire take the place of his deceased knight. A Knight of the Seven Kingdom should add a tone closer to the buddy movie and the initiatory story, while infusing it with recurring themes from Game of Thrones.
The works will then focus on telling the common adventures of the two heroes, one becoming the mentor of the youngest. There is no political game here, it is Westeros through the eyes of the subjects of King Aegon III Targaryen which is explored. The universe will thus escape from the nobility to tell the destiny of little people. Dexter Sol Ansell (Egg) and Peter Claffey (Dunk) have been recruited to play these two makeshift friends, who will meet “powerful enemies and perform dangerous feats”.
Who is in the casting?
Besides the main duo, A Knight of the Seven Kingdom added some nice names to its cast. Daniel Ingsrevealed by the series Lovesick and recently guest of The Gentlemen on Netflix, will portray Ser Lyonel Baratheon opposite Sam Spruell in the shoes of Maekar Targaryen and Bertie Carvel in that of Baelor. Alongside the announcement of the start of filming, HBO formalizes the participation of new actors and actresses. Finn Bennett will be Aerion Targaryen while Tanzyn Crawford will play Tanselle.
Ira Parker is writing of this new series, she also acts as showrunner. George RR Martin – as usual – is not very far away since he is producing this new adaptation. Sarah Adina Smith will direct three of the six episodes what this first season will include. Owen Harris will take care of the next three, he who worked on Black Mirror et Misfits.
When does it come out?
The formalization of the start of filming is good news for spectators, who should not have to wait too long before being able to lay eyes on this project. The series is promised a released in 2025. Enough to fill the void left by House of the Dragon ? If the series dedicated to Alicent and Rhaenyra must return for a third round of episodes, spectators will undoubtedly have to wait until 2026 to discover what the future holds for the two clans.
