The series Yellowstone reached a decisive turning point with episode 9 of season 5, which finally revealed the fate of John Dutton, played by Kevin Costner. Attention spoilers !

No wonder we found Kevin Costner in the cast of the series Yellowstone by Taylor Sheridan and John Linson. Launched in 2018, the series now has five seasons and two spin-offs, as well as a sequel with Kurt Russell, The Madison. The first part of season 5 of Yellowstone had been broadcast at the end of 2022, and its second part was expected for November 2024.
But due to creative differences and scheduling incompatibilities, Kevin Costner announced that he would not return for a season 6, which jeopardized the future of the series. An announcement which left the second part of season 5 in limbo, but it was still able to be carried out, without the help of Costner. Episode 9 of Season 5 finally settled the fate of his character John Duttonand this, in a radical way.
Yellowstone version Tombstone
The second part of the fifth season of Yellowstone fixed the fate of John Dutton from the outset. The Dutton ranch is surrounded by police, while Beth (Kelly Reilly) and Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes) have just discovering the body of their father, John, lying in a pool of blood. According to the first elements revealed by the police, it would be a suicide.
The reasons for such an act remain enigmatic, but Kayce immediately pointed the finger at Jamie, John's adopted son, because the latter had initiated impeachment proceedings against his father, governor of his state. In his eyes, Jamie is responsible for John's death.
Episode 9 gave some details on the circumstances of the death of the Dutton patriarch. A few weeks before her alleged suicide, long-toothed lawyer Sara Atwood (Dawn Olivieri), working for the Market Equities conglomerate, approached Jamie Dutton, became his mistress, and manipulated him into launches impeachment proceedings against his own father.
Subsequently, we learn that certain flocks of Market Equities hatched a plan to assassinate John Dutton and to disguise his murder as suicide. A plan that Sara Atwood was fully aware of. This second part of season 5 therefore begins with the firm and definitive ousting of John Dutton/Kevin Costner from the equation Yellowstone. The death of the patriarch risks causing the pure and simple breakup of the Dutton family, and leaving their land at the mercy of Market Equities.
Despite the death of Kevin Costner's character, Paramount and the showrunners of Yellowstone have confirmed that the series will indeed have a sixth season. The episodes of the second part of season 5 of Yellowstone have been broadcast weekly on Paramount+ since November 11, 2024.
