Publisher presentation

Imagine that one day, in the middle of nowhere, you find a door. And that it opens onto an unknown world. A parallel world, where your destiny, your past and your future will come from.

January Ruddy, the door finder, is a curiosity in herself: orphaned, kept as a precious object in a mansion full of other precious objects, a life in tatters, full of holes. One day she finds a fascinating book, imbued with the scent of adventure, which relates the strange story of the ten thousand secret doors, that of the world of the Written. A story strewn with pitfalls, but so closely woven into his own. Because January doesn’t know it yet, but everything that is written becomes true.

Thérèse’s opinion

When I was seven I found a door“. It is with these simple words that January invites us to enter her captivating world. But it wasn’t a door, it was a Door that fully deserved its capital letter and that would transform his life.

This is the story of January Ruddy, raised by Mr. Locke, a wealthy collector, while her father Julian travels the world in search of extraordinary artifacts for him. Solitary, isolated in Mr. Locke’s luxurious mansion, she has only one friend, the grocer’s son who shares with her a taste for fantastic novels. The young girl raised to be wise, discreet and docile will ultimately rebel against authority.

This is the story of the mysterious book found by January, which tells the adventures of Adelaide Larson, who went in search of ten thousand Doors after falling in love with a young ghost. These Doors which open onto other worlds…

It’s a story filled with adventure, unconditional love, passion, betrayals, discoveries, and magic of course. A novel in the form of Russian dolls, in which several stories intertwine, which speaks of the power of words, the power of the written word and love.

Alix E. Harrow patiently constructs an entire world, and even several, in a captivating, poetic story, which sometimes takes its time in chapters where not much happens, especially in the first part of the novel, but we then discover that everything matters, everything comes together in the end.

We fell in love with this novel which reminds us that there is magic in all books. Only one regret: it would have been fascinating to learn more about the learning of leximancers, their art which allows them to modify the world with words.

Reading is not withdrawing from the world, it is entering the world through other doors“, said the late Bernard Pivot. Alix E. Harrow’s novel takes us into ten thousand different and fascinating worlds.
