The casting team of The Big Bang Theory was right in choosing Kaley Cuoco and Johnny Galecki. The two actors were hired to play Penny and Leonard on the popular CBS series: Penny was the girl next door and Leonard was nervous every time he had to talk to her. Their characters eventually fell in love in fiction, but long before that, the actors also began a real-life relationship. The chemistry they showed during tryouts in front of the cameras was real.

The two actors were already in a relationship, each on their own, when they met, but they began dating in the first season of the series, filmed in 2007. Their relationship ended after two years , after which they began filming the third season of the series and Penny and Leonard became lovers. Coincidence? The Big Bang Theory stars always believed it was punishment for what happened in their private lives. The creator of the series would have introduced intimate scenes to upset them: “Suddenly we were on top of each other“.

There were more kissing scenes for our characters, as well as sex scenes

Both agreed during an interview with Variety. “All of a sudden we started to realize that there were more kissing scenes for our characters, as well as sex scenes“, explains Kaley Cuoco. “I said to myself, ‘I think Chuck is making fun of us!’. We were convinced – convinced! Like he was saying, ‘Yeah, they want to come out and break up on my show, well, there you go!’ and he wrote all these things in this sense“, she continues.

Even if it made sense for the characters, I think he wanted to make fun of us“, continued Johnny Galecki. For his part, the actor declared that if the creator had done it unintentionally, his actions had been “too well chosen“. The love story between Penny and Leonard was left crumbs from season 1 to season 12. Although their relationship does not work out in reality, the characters end up getting married twice: once in season 9 and once in season 10.

There was no question of bothering Kaley and Johnny

When the actors shared their views with Variety, the outlet didn’t hesitate to call Chuck Lorre to explain what happened. “No not at all. There’s no room in a good show to fool anyone“, explains the creator of the series. “There was no question of annoying Kaley and Johnny”.

The goal was to make a good series and make every minute of every episode count. And that was the only goal. We don’t have such freedom to risk a TV series where you put your heart and soul into messing with someone’s head. This is absolutely not the case“, he added.

The creator also emphasizes that one of the fundamental objectives of the series was for the viewer to want Leonard and Penny to be together from the first episode: “That was one of the reasons to keep watching, to see if they could do it. You encouraged them to find happiness“.

When Johnny Galecki heard his former colleague’s words, he laughed: “I think it was quite selfish of us to think that. We made too much fuss. I’m going to sleep a little deeper tonight“.
