But the hospital is in deficit and its board of directors accepted a takeover offer from a giant in the sector. As the emergency room doors began to close, two women entered, absorbed in hushed conversation. The tallest, a brunette, wore a stethoscope around her neck and was dressed casually in black pants and a well-pressed pale blue shirt. The other, with brown hair, was dressed in green scrubs and a white lab coat. They stopped and looked at Presley.
The brunette caught the door before it closed and smiled.
— Are you going to see a patient?
The question caught Presley off guard, or perhaps the warm smile and soft, caressing voice. The morning was ripe for surprises.
– No thanks. Actually, I’m looking for the administrative wing.
The woman in scrubs burst out laughing, her brown eyes sparkling with arrogance and self-confidence.
— Well, we’re not exactly talking about a wing, maybe more like a wing tip.
“That will do,” Presley said.
“I’m going in that direction,” said the brunette, holding out her hand. Harper Rivers.
Another Rivers. Presley grabbed his hand. She was big, hot and strong.
—Presley Worth.
– Delighted to meet you.
Harper Rivers’ eyes were a deep, dramatic blue. Presley found it hard to look away. She let go of Harper’s hand.
– Me too.
“My name is Flannery,” said the young woman with brown hair, sliding into Presley’s field of vision. The most beautiful sister.
Presley looked at them and spotted the square jaws, the straight, firm noses, the full, expressive lips. The eyes were a different color, but the looks were similar: intelligent and confident. Dr. Rivers’ supply was seemingly inexhaustible.
“I will prudently refrain from commenting,” Presley said.
Harper laughs and Flannery smiles.
