Interested in Japan’s Edo Period? Watch These 3 Netflix Productions!

The Edo period (1603-1868) in Japan is the period when the country closed itself off, cutting off all trade with the outside world. Netflix is gradually starting to take an interest in it, particularly through animated productions. Here is our selection.

Blue Eye Samurai

Pitch : Mizu, a sword master, is not a warrior like the others. Hiding under a false identity and tinted round glasses, the blue-eyed half-breed is planning revenge.

Our opinion: Thanks to its artistic direction and narration, this animated series is of high quality! The visuals are breathtaking, entirely in 3D, and offer an interesting immersion in a Japan in the Edo era. The fight scenes are also well worked. A mature production, which stands out from the crowd.

The Men’s Pavilion

Pitch : When smallpox ravages the Japanese population, only men are affected by the disease. Women must then occupy major roles in society. Yoshimune, shogun, reigns with authority over the country.

Our opinion: Adapted from a successful manga, this anime raises multiple fundamental questions about gender equality, the economy of a country in crisis and its politics. Noriyuki Abe, director and creator, offers beautiful visuals. A great discovery!

Mononoke

Pitch : In Edo-era Japan, a mysterious medicine seller seeks to exorcise evil spirits by understanding each of their dimensions.

Our opinion: While the animation in this Netflix production is fairly basic, it is nonetheless entertaining and informative. The plot is off the beaten track and is fast-paced.
