Shock and amazement at rue Bon Espoir, Rivière-des-Créoles. Jayveen Tetarie, aged just 12, who was taking the Primary School Achievement Certificate (PSAC) exams, died in tragic circumstances. On Saturday September 30, he was discovered with injuries at his home. The autopsy concluded that he died of strangulation. Ramjeet Tetarie, 44, his father is suspected of having beaten him. This executive in a bank was apprehended by the Criminal Investigation Division of Mahébourg. He was charged with murder on Sunday in the Bail and Remand Court.
Investigators are wondering whether the father gave in to a fit of anger, leading to the tragedy, or whether the child was confronted by an intruder in their home. The father will be questioned by his lawyer at the start of the week, although he has already denied any involvement in this tragedy during a first interview with investigators.
According to the information available to them, around eight in the morning, the father dropped his son off at his private lessons. Around 11 a.m., accompanied by his wife, who works as a nurse, and his mother-in-law, he returned to pick up Jayveen. Then, after dropping the ladies off in Mahébourg, the father and his three children, including six-year-old twins, returned home.
At the time of the tragedy, Jayveen was upstairs, while her father was downstairs. The father told investigators that at one point he went upstairs. “I discovered my son unconscious,” he had to tell the sleuths. He immediately alerted his family members, and the child was rushed to Mahébourg hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after. The post-mortem, conducted by Dr Sudesh Kumar Gungadin, chief forensic pathologist, on Saturday evening, revealed that Jayveen died of asphyxia due to ligature strangulation. So far, evidence collected by investigators appears to point to the father as the main suspect in the case. The child had bruises on his body. Samples will be taken in the room where the little one was discovered.
Ramjeet Tetarie’s brother, Vikram, is deeply shocked by this painful loss. He was one of the first people to respond when the incident occurred. “I heard my brother screaming. He said his son was no longer moving. I ran upstairs and saw my nephew on the floor. He was unconscious. I tried to give him first aid, but he did not regain consciousness. We took him to Mahébourg hospital, where the medical staff informed us that my nephew had already breathed his last,” he said.
For Vikram Tetarie, his brother is a respected man who can be strict with his son, but he says he would never have intended to take his life. “He loved his son deeply. Maybe he scolded him from time to time, but he would never lay a hand on his child to hurt him. We do not understand how such a thing could have happened,” he added.
“My nephew was taking the PSAC exams. He was a very educated and intelligent young man,” the uncle continued. Initially, he considered delaying the child’s funeral, expressing his disagreement with the autopsy findings and seeking a second medical opinion. However, the funeral finally took place as planned on Sunday afternoon.
The father, a suspect in this affair, was escorted to his home by investigators from the Mahébourg CID to attend the child’s funeral. Ramjeet Tetarie burst into tears as his son’s remains were placed in the coffin. Then he was taken back to the police cell. This family tragedy shook the entire neighborhood community, who never imagined hearing such atrocious news.
