Specializing in the manufacture of styrofoam trays for catering, the Dyne-A-Pak plant in Vimont was the scene of a costly fire on Friday May 26.
It was 3:44 p.m. when a first call reached 911, before several others were made as the first of the 28 firefighters required for the intervention, i.e. 7 units from the Laval Fire Department, headed for the industrial building located on avenue Francis-Hughes, at rue Michelin.
Arrived on site at 3:49 p.m., the firefighters ensured that the premises had been evacuated by the staff, while spotting smoke once inside; what had testified the people who had contacted the center of emergency calls.
Approaching two displays of finished products, the sappers discovered the beginnings of a fire among them; while a sprinkler system was already activated.
So they immediately got busy undoing these two sets of styrofoam material; then the firefighters quickly extinguished the fire, while taking care to contain its spread, as other shelves filled with this highly combustible material were nearby.
It was around 5:41 p.m. that the firefighters finally took complete control of the fire, not without causing heavy damage summarily evaluated at some $1.5 million for the contents and $5,000 for the building structure.
Luckily, the Dyne-A-Pak company avoided the worst during this fire, because some will remember a similar incident that occurred in 2004 which devastated two-thirds of the plant.
