The former president of the relief zone, Jean-Luc Nix (since replaced by Maxime Degey), added: “I have denounced on several occasions that ambulances were used as taxis for some. I see it every day at the Alexian Brothers clinic: people wait at the exit of the clinic with their luggage for the ambulance to take them to the station. We have to realize that we are monopolizing an ambulance and that it is not there to respond to a cardiac arrest!”
The commander made it clear that the zone did not provide a return home; but transport to the clinic under requisition by a magistrate. “It’s an urgent mission in the broadest sense, something we’ve been denouncing for years.”

Behind the interventions attributed to firefighters, we first find technical interventions (41.1%, people trapped, risk of collapse, cleaning, etc.), logistical interventions (20.8%, markings, etc.), false alarms ( 18.2%), fires (15.4%), then interventions for dangerous substances (4.2%, annoying odors, gas leaks, pollution, etc.), or even qualified as special (0.2%) . The municipalities most impacted in 2024 are Verviers, Herve, Spa, Soumagne and Theux. Among the 653 fire interventions, we found fires in buildings (147), exteriors (131), chimneys (58), vehicles (63), etc.
Finally, this year 2024 was marked by a series of large-scale interventions such as this busy day with 6 large simultaneous interventions, the crash of a plane in Spa causing two deaths, bad weather on May 17 and 18, a fire housing with a death on June 24, the fire in the garage in Tiège, the bodywork in Plombières, the dramatic road accident resulting in three deaths (including two children) in Plombières and, finally, the fatal fire of a caravan on December 24 in Jalhay.
