The Russia continues its ambition to strengthen its diplomatic presence in Africa by announcing the opening of three new embassies in Niger, Sierra Leone and South Sudan. This decision, unveiled this Thursday by the spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharovaillustrates Moscow’s desire to raise its relations with the continent to a higher level.

“The opening of Russian embassies in the countries of the continent corresponds to the desire, mutual with African partners, to take our multifaceted cooperation to a higher level,” she declared during a press briefing at Moscow. This gesture is part of a context of increased rivalry between great powers to increase their influence in Africaa continent rich in natural resources and with considerable economic and geopolitical potential.

The choice of three countries reveals a targeted strategy. THE Nigerdespite recent political instability, remains a key player in West Africa, particularly because of its strategic geographic position and its role in the fight against terrorism.
