Burundi, a country located in the heart of Africa, relies on its mining resources of which gold and cassiterite (tin) are emerging.

This year, the Burundian government is working hard to accelerate its development and achieve emergence by 2040.

According to President Ndayishimiye 2025 will be the year of intensive work. He encourages young students to work hard to build a more prosperous Burundi. Its ambition is to achieve an emerging Burundi in 2040 and a fully developed country by 2060.

With this in mind, the President of Burundi began, on January 6, 2025, a tour of the country’s mining sites to closely observe operating conditions and encourage the use of modern technologies.

Cassiterite

Cassiterite is the main ore of tin. It plays a big role in the manufacturing of electrical appliances. Telephones, computers, electric cars cannot function without it.

Burundi is full of a large quantity of this mineral resource. On Monday January 6, the Burundian president visited the country’s cassiterite sites.

He first visited the Rutanganika mining site in Makebuko, in Gitega province, managed by the Abahizi Minerals Cooperative. The President then explored the Nyabikere and Shombo cassiterite mines located in Karusi provinces.

In Nyabikere, where the Shishikara Light Cooperative is involved, the president asked the Burundian Office of Mines (OBM) to review mining contracts with cooperatives in order to optimize the exploitation of resources.

On Tuesday, January 7, the president’s tour continued in the provinces of Ruyigi, Cankuzo and Muyinga, where gold deposits are exploited.

The president highlighted the importance of responsible and beneficial mining for the Burundian population, while emphasizing the need for sustainable management of natural resources.

During his visit to the Masaka I and II mining sites in Butihinda, Muyinga province, he praised the use of cutting-edge tools and technologies by the SOTEB company.
