A priori, you spend more time watching videos than reading the latest literary awards… In any case, this is what we can assume when we see the results of the Mediametrie study on the time spent by French in front of a screen. After an increase since 2020 and the Covid-19 epidemic, this daily duration has returned to the 2019 level (4 hours and 24 minutes).

But the measurements are not strictly comparable, Médiamétrie having integrated in 2020 the audience outside the home or on the move regardless of the screen, then a year ago the audience on internet screens at home, including at home. in homes not equipped with a television.

hasn’t said its last word

We thought that mobiles and tablets had taken down daddy’s TV, but that’s not the case, television is holding up very well to the proliferation of screens. In detail, for the year 2024, old-style television still represents nearly two thirds (64%) of video time, compared to a third (36%) for on-demand content on platforms (streaming, networks social…).

Booming, the platforms of traditional channels (such as france.tv, TF1 +, M6 +) were visited at least once a month by eight out of ten people. The French watch an average of 10 minutes of television on demand per day on these platforms, which offer programs ahead of their TV broadcast (preview) or rebroadcast (replay) but also original content.

In the last quarter of 2024, attendance on these platforms even saw an increase of 10% compared to the first quarter, with 11.6 million French people having watched at least one program on demand every day.

“Controlling the choice of when we watch our content is becoming a habit among the French,” underlined Laurence Deléchapt, TV & Cross media director at Médiamétrie, to the press.

Sports and political news boosted audiences

Traditional live television, however, had an exceptional summer of 2024 with the Olympic and Paralympic Games and also the political sequence, from the European elections to the legislative elections.

Best audience in the history of television, the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games on July 26 brought together 24.4 million viewers, “replay” included. Some 23.2 million French people followed at least one of the two televised debates linked to the legislative elections.
