Tour Down Under: Javier Romo stage winner and new leader after an epic day

VIDEO – The 3rd stage of the Tour Down Under 2025 was marked by the stage victory of Javier Romo (Movistar), new leader, at the end of an extremely demanding course. The ascents of Norton Summit et de Knott’s Hill put the riders to the test, allowing the climbers to stand out and place themselves in the general classification.

The 3rd stage of the Tour Down Under 2025, contested on Thursday January 23was one of the most demanding of this edition. With a journey of 147,5 km and a positive altitude difference of 3,236 metersthis stage put the runners to the test, notably thanks to formidable climbs like Norton Summit and the double rise of Knott’s Hill. These difficulties allowed the punchers and climbers to stand out, while the sprinters had to fight to stay in the peloton.

The start was given to Norwoodand the riders were immediately confronted with Norton Summitan ascent of 10 km with slopes reaching 17,8 %. This climb caused an initial selection in the peloton, eliminating the riders least comfortable at altitude. However, the real challenge of the stage was the double ascent of Knott’s Hilla new coast introduced in 2025. With 2,6 km has 7,5 % of average slope and passages 22,2 %this climb was the scene of decisive attacks, notably during the second ascent, at 21,5 km of arrival.

The technical finale, with a rapid descent of 3 km before arrival at Uraidlarequired excellent effort management and technical mastery. Favorites like Jhonatan Narváez (UAE Team Emirates) et Jay Vine (UAE Team Emirates) shone, but it was ultimately Javier Romo (Movistar Team) who won solo, thus taking the lead in the general classification.
