On the Rod Laver Arena, the first quarter-final of the day in the men’s draw pits Ben Shelton against Lorenzo Sonego.
The American is aiming for a second Grand Slam semi-final while the Italian is a novice at this stage of the competition.
But that doesn’t stop Sonego, 29, from trying his luck to the fullest. In the first set, the scorer of Wawrinka, Fonseca, Marozsan and Tien achieved a point which will remain as one of the most beautiful of the tournament.
While he had to save a break point in the first game of the second set, Sonego was offensive and his risks paid off.
-As he went to the net, he delivered a diving backhand volley that bounced once in Shelton’s court before the ball returned to his own half (see below).
A winning shot as improbable as it was magnificent and which was duly praised by the spectators.
