Holding the trophy, Jannik Sinner (ATP 1) easily qualified for the semi-finals of the Australian Open. The Italian eliminated the Australian Alex de Minaur (ATP 8) in three sets, 6-3 6-2 6-1.
Sinner converted his second match point after a real demonstration. His opponent had no say in the matter, losing his serve six times during a one-sided game which lasted only 1 hour 48 minutes.
A double Grand Slam winner, the 23-year-old Italian signed his 19th consecutive victory, thus equaling his record. Sinner is in fact undefeated since the final of the Beijing tournament at the beginning of October 2024, where he was dominated by world number 3 Carlos Alcaraz.
After an eighth-final where he seemed overwhelmed by the heat and admitted to having suffered from ‘dizziness’, the world No. 1 experienced little difficulty on Wednesday in much milder temperatures (around twenty degrees Celsius).
-Thanks to his victory against De Minaur, beaten ten times in as many confrontations by the Italian, Sinner becomes the first player from his country to reach the last four of the first Grand Slam of the season several times.
Sinner will face American southpaw Ben Shelton on Friday.
