National Councilor (MP) of the Socialist Party Islam Aliaj received an award at the WEF in Davos for his commitment to the inclusion of people with disabilities. The Schwab Foundation for Social Entrepreneurship awarded prizes to 18 leaders, reports albinfo.ch. Aliaj receives the “public social innovator” award.
At least since his election to the National Council for the PS in the canton of Zurich in 2023, Islam Aliaj is no longer unknown in Switzerland. Aliaj received the Schwab Foundation Prize, among others, for the creation of the Tatkraft organization. “Tatkraft” is an association created by and for people with disabilities. The aim of the association is that people with disabilities can shape their daily lives in a self-determined way, writes srf.ch.
One of the main projects of “Tatkraft” is the inclusion initiative, for which the association is collecting signatures.
What is the Schwab Foundation Prize?
-The Schwab Foundation Award honors individuals and organizations that bring lasting social change through innovative approaches. Award winners come from diverse backgrounds, including social entrepreneurs, government and civil society leaders, and academics, reports albinfo.ch. What they have in common is that they tackle systemic challenges and develop transformative solutions to improve the lives of many people.
The first Albanian-Swiss in the Federal Parliament
As he writes on his website, Islam Aliaj, 37, had many reasons for not being able to pursue a career as a politician and activist. Aliaj is disabled; he has suffered from cerebral palsy since birth, is wheelchair dependent and has an obvious speech impediment. Added to this is his origin from Albanian immigration. He is the first Swiss-Albanian in the National Council.
The fact that he was elected to the National Council is due to his strong desire to make things happen, reports albinfo.ch. His goal is a “disability revolution”, as he told the online portal “Watson” in 2023 before the elections.
The Schwab Foundation rewards him for his commitment and his desire to make a difference in society.
