Paris Saint-Germain (25th) is playing very big at home on Wednesday against Manchester City while Brest (7th) against Shakhtar and Lille (8th) at Liverpool will try to secure their future in the Champions League.
Monaco (16th) for its part has an interest in beating Aston Villa in the third Franco-English clash on Tuesday at home so as not to be frightened.
But the best display of the 7th and penultimate day is played out at the Parc des Princes between two behemoths who have reached the semi-finals three times in the last five seasons but are currently in great difficulty on the continental scene.
PSG (7 points) is 25th, just below 24th place, which grants the last ticket for the play-offs in the round of 16. City, 22nd with 8 points, is not much better off. However, elimination from the League phase would be disgraceful for one of these two giants.
PSG and City revived
But both PSG and City approach the ring refreshed.
Luis Enrique’s players remain on eight victories in a row. Those of Pep Guardiola are back in the Premier League (4th) with three victories in four matches after a huge slump at the end of the autumn of nine defeats in fourteen matches in all competitions, including two in C1. Reassured, they have just undergone a correction at Ipswich (6-0).
Much calmer with 13 points, six lengths ahead of 25th place PSG, Brest and Lille are almost qualified.
Losc, however, finds itself at the foot of a mountain: the Liverpool Reds have won all their C1 matches and are only one point away from direct qualification for the round of 16.
Mbappé in good shape
Brest plays in Gelsenkirchen in the Schalke 04 stadium against Shakhtar Donetsk (27th), on the verge of elimination with only 4 pts.
Finally Monaco must stop its fall, two defeats in C1 against Benfica (3-2) and Arsenal (3-0) which spoiled its good start to the European season, and a hiccup in Montpellier (2-1), good last of L1, Friday.
With 13 points like Brest and Lille, Aston Villa (5th), ASM’s opponent, is very close to securing its place at least in the play-offs, like three other teams, Arsenal, Bayer Leverkusen (4th), expected in Madrid with Atlético (11th), and Inter Milan (6th), in Prague with Sparta (28th).
Like City and PSG, Real Madrid (20th, 9 pts) is in danger, but Kylian Mbappé, author of a double against Las Palmas (4-1), returns to great form and the opponent expected Wednesday evening at Bernabeu, RB Salzburg (32nd, 3 pts), is already almost out of the race.
RB Leipzig, Bratislava and Young Boys Bern are eliminated.
