A polar vortex has gripped North America and has Quebec in its sights. Here are some tips and advice to protect your vehicle.

An arctic air mass entered Quebec on Sunday through the western gates. Feelings of -30 were observed, particularly in Abitibi-Témiscamingue. However, the worst is to come: in Montreal, the mercury could remain below -15°C for three consecutive days, from Monday to Wednesday. This would be a first in more than five years.

Further north, feelings could approach -45 in places, including around Chibougamau. These tips and tricks, offered by David Marcille, spokesperson for CAA Quebec, could help you before hitting the road.

Before an episode of extreme cold arrives, you should increase the distance you travel in order to charge the battery more. The night before, turning off accessories such as lights could also be helpful

Dads are right: it is best to keep the gas tank half full to prevent condensation which could damage the vehicle’s mechanics.

Good to know: according to David Marcille, it would be beneficial to test the battery when changing tires. Additionally, synthetic oil would be preferable due to its viscosity.

RESS TEMP MONDAY

When you need to start the car, you should not try for more than eight seconds. These attempts must be spaced about thirty seconds apart for a maximum of four attempts.

In conclusion, since the autonomy of electric batteries can decrease by 40% to 50% during extreme cold, you must plan your trips carefully.
