MADRID, January 19 – Spanish star Paula Badosa reached the quarter-finals of the Australian Open for the first time in her career, after a solid victory against Serbian Olga Danilovic, winning 6 -1, 7-6(2). Badosa is now preparing to face the American Coco Gauff, seeded number three in the tournament, in Melbourne.

On the Margaret Court, the world number 12 started with a bang, establishing a 5-0 lead which allowed her to quickly win the first set. However, she faced a challenge when Danilovic came back with a 5-2 advantage in the second set.

With a break of serve, Badosa forced a tiebreaker in which she showed remarkable skill, closing the match on her second match point. Throughout the match, Badosa made seven aces and won 82% of his service points on the first try, achieving his first quarter-final in Melbourne and his third Grand Slam, after his runs at Roland-Garros in 2021 and at the US Open in 2024.

“The second set was a bit complicated because I was down 5-2, but it didn’t feel like a real 5-2 because I was playing well. I think I changed the momentum and I ended up playing really well again,” Badosa said after the game.

With this feat, Badosa becomes the first Spanish woman to reach the quarter-finals of the Australian Open since Garbiñe Muguruza in 2020, when Muguruza reached the final.

For her next meeting, Badosa will face the world number three, Coco Gauff, who had to make a comeback in her fourth round match against the Swiss Belinda Bencic, winning 5-7, 6-2, 6-1. The record between Badosa and Gauff is 3-3, although the American won the last two meetings last year.
