Vladimir Putin received his Iranian counterpart Massoud Pezeshkian at the Kremlin this Friday, January 17. The objective: to sign a strategic partnership agreement strengthening the “military cooperation” within the framework of their alliance, perceived as a counterweight against « diktat » of the West. These two nations are in fact targeted by multiple Western sanctions which affect their economies.
According to Euronews, the text mentions multiple areas in “ambitious goals”, in the words of Vladimir Putin. The Iranian leader mentions an agreement which should open « horizons » between Iran and Russia. Basically, the 47 articles of this agreement provide for the development of their military cooperation and mutual support in the face of “security threats”.

First meeting since October
Last year, Russia reached a similar agreement with North Korea. The latter went further by mentioning a “immediate military aid” which is not the case in the agreement with Tehran, as stated by the head of Iranian diplomacy, Abbas Araghchi.

For the moment, Iran is accused by the West of supplying explosive drones and short-range missiles to Russia as part of the conflict with Ukraine. Tehran denies these accusations. The bond between the two nations is strengthening as Donald Trump reclaims the American presidency in three days. During the press conference, the Iranian leader called for “negotiations and peace” between Moscow and kyiv.
Before the signing of this agreement, Massoud Pezeshkian laid a wreath of flowers in front of the tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Moscow and spoke with Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin. The Russian and Iranian leaders have not seen each other since the BRICS summit in Russia last October.
