Haaland reveals his favourite City moment so far

After that record-breaking debut season at City, Haaland made an equally big impact last season, when City made history by becoming the first English men’s team to win four consecutive Premier League titles.

Although injured for almost two months, Erling scored 38 goals in 45 matches, including 27 in the Premier League, which helped him win his second Golden Boot in a row.

The Norwegian has once again been very prolific since the start of the 2024-25 season, scoring 16 goals in just 21 Premier League appearances and scoring 21 goals in all competitions in 28 matches to date.

He already occupies 15th place in the list of top scorers in the club’s history.

Haaland said of his new contract: “I am very happy to have signed my new contract and to be able to spend even more time at this great club.

“Manchester City is a special club, full of fantastic people and extraordinary supporters, and it’s the kind of environment that allows everyone to perform at their best.

“I would also like to thank Pep, his staff, my teammates and everyone at the club, because they have helped me a lot over the last two years. They have made this club such a special place and whatever happens, I am now City.

“I want to continue to develop, work to improve and do my best to help us achieve more success in the future.”

City director of football Txiki Begiristain added: “Everyone at the club is absolutely delighted that Erling has signed his new contract. The fact that he has signed for so long demonstrates our commitment to him as a player and his love for this club.

“He has already made an incredible impact since he has been here and his numbers and records speak for themselves.

“But in addition to his natural talent and exceptional ability, Erling’s dedication, professionalism, humility and desire to continually improve encapsulate what we all strive to achieve at Manchester City.

“He is one of the best strikers in world football, but Erling is still very young and will continue to improve under the guidance of Pep and his staff. If he works hard, and I know he will, he will leave an incredible legacy to this football club.

“Now he can focus on his game and continue to play an important role in helping us try to achieve even more success.

Everyone at City is delighted with this news and we wish Erling every success until the end of his contract here.

An exceptional talent

Among the multitude of exceptional talents who have shone in the Premier League since its inception over 33 years ago, arguably none has had as big and immediate an impact as Erling Haaland.

From the start, when Erling left Borussia Dortmund in the summer of 2022, it was clear that City had acquired a rare and special talent.

However, few could have predicted the way the striker would light up the world’s most competitive league.

By any metric used to measure his impact, the 24-year-old Norwegian’s contribution to City’s success in recent seasons has been of an unprecedented scale in this country.

The center forward joined the Etihad from Borussia Dortmund, with a formidable reputation thanks to his superb exploits in the Bundesliga, but also with Austrian club RB Salzburg and Molde, in his native Norway.

Additionally, Haaland arrived in Manchester with a special family connection to the club. His father Alfie was himself a City player in the early 2000s, and Erling was also photographed in a City shirt in his youth.

But no one could have predicted the extraordinary impact Haaland would immediately have on City in particular and English football in general.

In his first season at the Etihad, the Byrne boy rewrote several pages of the English football record book.

His Premier League debut at West Ham, marked by two goals, was the prelude to an unprecedented season, both individually and collectively, as Pep Guardiola’s side prepared to complete a treble that marked history.

Erling Haaland’s statistics that season are dizzying.

With a total of 52 goals in all competitions, Haaland has scored the most goals ever scored by a Premier League player.

Indeed, with 36 goals, he broke the record for the most goals scored in the Premier League during the same season, previously held by Andrew Cole and Alan Shearer.

In March, in the 7-0 Champions League round of 16 second leg victory over RB Leipzig, Erling wrote another chapter in Manchester City’s history, scoring five goals. His quintuple saw him score the most goals in a season for the club, surpassing the record of 38 goals set by Tommy Johnstone – a record which had stood since the 1928–29 campaign.

The striker has also scored six hat-tricks in all competitions, as many as all other active Premier League players combined. During the fall of 2022, Haaland achieved the feat of scoring a hat-trick in three matches in a row at the Etihad, against Crystal Palace, Nottingham Forest and Manchester United, a first in the elite.

The range of goals scored by the Norwegian is also remarkable. From point-blank box goals to impressive headers, from acrobatic jumps where he seems to defy the laws of gravity to thunderous shots and frenzied runs, his repertoire is simply extraordinary.

For a player who knew the eyes of the world would be on him week after week, Erling played with a smile from the start, showing his joy at playing for his beloved city.

As well as his freedom of expression, he also demonstrated an unwavering appetite and drive, constantly seeking to improve and learn – the very foundations of Pep Guardiola’s approach to football.

Individual awards were quick to follow in the wake of his immense contribution to City’s greatest season of all time.

Among a plethora of individual awards, Haaland was voted PFA Player of the Year, Football Writers’ Association Player of the Year – receiving over 80% of the votes – and was voted both Player of the Year of the Year and Young Player of the Year.

After all these achievements, the question was simple: “How on earth can you continue on this path?”

Haaland’s response, as always, was to let his football speak in the most beautiful way and continue what he has always done: score more goals.

Last season, Erling scored 38 goals in 45 appearances, including 27 in the Premier League, earning him a second Golden Boot in a row.

He could have performed even better if he had not been rested for almost two months this winter due to a foot injury.

Haaland’s efforts were instrumental in helping Guardiola’s side win a fourth successive Premier League title, an unprecedented feat no English men’s team had achieved.

Erling also helped City win the UEFA Super Cup last August. Unfortunately, a mid-winter foot injury kept him out of the Skyblues’ FIFA Club World Cup triumph in Saudi Arabia late last year.

Haaland also became the fastest player in Premier League history to reach 50 goals, as well as the youngest and fastest to reach 40 goals in the UEFA Champions League.

Before the end of 2023, other individual awards followed: Erling received the prestigious 2023 Gerd Muller Trophy at that year’s Ballon d’Or, before being named World Personality of the Year. 2023 by BBC Sports Personality.

Once again, Erling tried to remind us that it was about the collective and not the individual.

In top form after a rarely long 2024 summer break, Haaland once again exploded from the start of the 2024-2025 season, scoring two hat-tricks in a row against Ipswich and West Ham before the end of August.

Erling then became the 19th player to score 100 goals for City when he scored in the 2-2 draw against Arsenal in September.

Most recently, his brace in our 4-1 home win over West Ham, City’s first game of 2025, saw him become the third highest Premier League scorer in the Etihad’s history, with a incredible total of 46 home goals in just 44 appearances.

Now, with his new contract, Erling is ready to bring even more joy and happiness to City fans until the end of the season and beyond.
