SPACE – Fireworks, a plane on fire, a shooting star? No, just Starship debris. This Thursday, January 16, a test flight by the company SpaceX turned into a disaster when Elon Musk’s company lost all contact with the second stage of its Starship megarocket, as you can see in our video above.

At first, everything went according to plan. The first stage of the rocket was overtaken by the famous « baguettes » from SpaceX, a complex maneuver based on the mechanical arms of the launch tower. But the applause and shouts of joy from employees quickly died down when a manager announced the loss of communication with the Starship, which exploded in mid-flight.

This failed show of force came just hours after the first flight into orbit by Blue Origin, the space company of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. Many people in the Caribbean region have posted impressive videos of the trails of burning debris streaking across the sky. “I just saw a crazy shower of debris in the Turks and Caicos Islands”for example, exclaimed a stunned Internet user.

“Success comes from what we learn, and today’s flight will help us improve Starship’s reliability”assured the company on X, a network of which Elon Musk is also the owner. The latter specified on X that the explosion had probably been triggered by a “oxygen/fuel leak”before reposting several videos of the debris lighting up the sky.
