Real Madrid went into halftime against Celta with a 1-0 lead. Carlo Ancelotti’s team temporarily found themselves in the quarter-finals of the Copa del Rey, thanks to a counter-attacking goal from Kylian Mbappé. However, that wasn’t all.
A few seconds before the Frenchman’s goal, Williot Swedberg fell in the home team’s penalty area. Andriy Lunin was taken to the ground and knocked down the visiting player, but referee Munuera Montero ruled that the action was not worth a penalty.
The play continued, and Real Madrid orchestrated a combination that resulted in Kylian Mbappé. The Frenchman made an individual action with space, passed his defender, positioned himself for a left-footed shot and made it 1-0, beating Iván Villar.
The controversy marred the image of the first half at the Santiago Bernabéu. Munuera Montero agreed with VAR not to award Celta a penalty, and his rival took advantage of the disbelief to deliver the decisive blow.
