Sierra Leone recalled its ambassador to Guinea, Almamy Bangoura, on Thursday after Guinean authorities seized a diplomatic vehicle belonging to the Sierra Leone embassy in Conakry on suspicion of transporting drugs.
On January 13, Guinean authorities seized a car belonging to the Sierra Leone embassy in Conakry and arrested the driver and a passenger on suspicion of being in possession of cocaine.
The Sierra Leonean government announced the opening of an investigation to determine the circumstances of the case and establish responsibilities.
In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed the recall of Ambassador Bangoura, emphasizing Freetown’s full cooperation with the Guinean authorities.
“The matter is serious,” the ministry said, reiterating the government’s strong stance against drug trafficking.
The statement reads: “Any person found guilty of violating Sierra Leonean and international laws relating to drug trafficking will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
The incident shocked official circles in Sierra Leone, and the government was keen to preserve the integrity of its diplomatic missions and ensure the safety of its staff by launching an investigation into the matter.
