“Last weeks for common clementines with sustained prices in the field and on the markets”

“We have around 20,000 kg of traditional clementines left to harvest and expect to finish sales in 15 days at the latest, before starting to market the late varieties (such as Hernandine, Mandalate, Tang Gold), for which we are however recording a drop in supply of up to 50%,” said Floriano Convertino of Convif in Massafra.

“Despite a controversial economic situation, production difficulties and weather conditions, linked for example to drought and a smaller size than usual, the season was satisfactory, but not excellent. We managed to keep ourselves at an acceptable price threshold: in the weeks before Christmas, starting prices were €0.55/kg, even for productions whose quality was not exceptional. Currently, we buy from €0.50/kg from factories. »

Demand collapsed after Epiphany in central and southern Italy, following the harvest being rushed due to fears that unfavorable weather conditions would spoil the fruit. In the northern regions, on the other hand, the commercial excitement did not stop, even after the festivities. “Large orders continue to arrive from many cities, such as Rimini, Bologna, Milan and Turin, with an upward price difference of 0.20 to 0.30 €/kg compared to central and southern destinations. As early as next week, we could see an increase in demand and quotes. Given the evolution of the markets, we preferred to stop exporting, because the domestic market is able to absorb all volumes with complete peace of mind. »
