Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Iranian counterpart Massoud Pezeshkian are due to sign a “global strategic partnership”presented as a new stage in the growing alliance between the two countries. Tehran and Moscow want to be counterweights, with Beijing, to American influence.
They have forged close ties in various sectors and support each other on numerous international issues, ranging from the Middle East to the conflict in Ukraine. Friday’s agreement will cover “economic and commercial cooperation in the fields of energy, the environment and issues related to defense and security”said the Iranian embassy in Russia last week.
Iran and Russia notably have in common that they are allies of the deposed Syrian president, Bashar Al-Assad, overthrown on December 8, 2024 by an offensive by a coalition of rebels dominated by Islamists.
