American director and screenwriter David Lynch, known for his films such as “Blue Velvet”, “Elephant Man” and “Mulholland Drive” as well as for the television series “Twin Peaks”, has died at the age of 78, his family announced Thursday on the social network Facebook.

“It is with deep regret that we announce the death of the man and artist, David Lynch,” his family wrote on his Facebook page.

Renowned for the singular aesthetic of his feature films, imbued with surreal, confusing and shocking sequences, David Lynch was considered one of the masters of the seventh art and one of the visionaries of his generation.

Multi-nominated for the Oscars in the category of best director, without winning the statuette, he received an honorary award for his entire career in 2019.

David Lynch also won the Palme d’Or at in 1990 for “Sailor and Lula”, among the films which illustrate his ability to stage enigmatic and complex works.

“A film or a painting, each thing has its own language, and it is not appropriate to try to express the same thing with words,” he said in 2018 in an interview with the British newspaper The Guardian.
