Keir Starmer in kyiv to seal ‘100-year’ security partnership
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer arrived this Thursday morning in kyiv where he is due to sign a security partnership “over 100 years” with Ukraine, a few days before Donald Trump’s return to the White House. The Labor leader, who is visiting Ukraine for the first time since his election in July, will sign this treaty on defense, energy and trade with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Downing Street announced in a statement.
Ukraine and its European allies fear possible American disengagement, with Donald Trump having repeatedly said he wants to end the conflict with Russia quickly. Volodomyr Zelensky said he and Starmer would discuss the possibility of stationing Western troops in Ukraine to oversee a ceasefire deal, a proposal initially put forward by French President Emmanuel Macron.
«No United Kingdom and Ukraine sign historic 100-year partnership to deepen security ties and strengthen their partnership for future generations”indicated Downing Street on the occasion of this surprise visit. “(Vladimir’s) ambition Poutine distancing Ukraine from its closest partners was a monumental strategic failure. On the contrary, we are closer than ever, and this partnership will take that friendship to the next level.”declared Keir Starmer, quoted in the press release.
