The Chinese social network must be banned in the United States as of January 19, and could completely close its doors in the process.

But contrary to what American users of the application could have hoped, in the event that the Supreme Court does not suspend (or does not rule) on the subject, Tiktok will be closed in the United States, including for those who have already downloaded the application.

An immediate closure in the pipeline for Tiktok

Concretely, its users could be redirected to a web page explaining the reasons for this sudden closure and the effective ban across the Atlantic, reveal Reuters and The Information. They will nevertheless be able to download their data and content published on the platform.

Tiktok’s reaction demonstrates the real standoff between the American authorities and the social network for months.

However, the law signed by Joe Biden did not stipulate an end to activity. It specified that the Tiktok application should simply be removed from the stores on iOS and Android, and that no American entity should collaborate with the platform. This did not prevent Tiktok from continuing to operate, even though it has a pool of more than 170 million users.

The Supreme Court’s decision could nevertheless come in the coming days. Internally, a memo sent to employees of the American subsidiary explains that at this stage, jobs are preserved.
