Rayo Vallecano coach takes ‘mea culpa’ on James Rodríguez: ‘Why couldn’t I?’

James Rodríguez’s long-awaited return to European football has been much different than expected. After a spell at São Paulo in Brazil and being named the best player at the Copa América, the Colombian arrived with fanfare at Rayo Vallecano but failed to demonstrate even a fraction of what he showed with the team Colombian National.

Indeed, during his six months at the club, he made only seven appearances, only two of which as a starter, and contributed with just one assist. He never became a key player for manager Íñigo Pérez, which ultimately led to the decision to terminate his contract, allowing him to join Club León in Mexico.

Now, just two days after being presented as León’s new recruit, the Rayo Vallecano coach faced the media and, for the first time, showed self-criticism regarding the situation involving the Colombian player.

Iñigo Pérez: I don’t consider James’ departure a relief

Ahead of the upcoming match against Real Sociedad in the Copa del Rey round of 16, Pérez said the Colombian’s departure is not a relief, but that he feels bad for not knowing how to use him better. “I don’t think it’s a relief that he’s gone. He did well here… He arrived as MVP of the Copa América; I accept the self-criticism and I’ll keep a ‘ point pending’ because I couldn’t get the best out of him,” said the coach.

This has sparked a variety of criticism on social media, with many claiming that his statements are just a face-saving attempt, completely overdue, and ultimately hoping that this mistake will not cost the team, which, all by doing well in the league standings, aim to avoid relegation next season.

In the meantime, James continues to get in shape with Club León to make his debut as soon as possible, as he feels fit and could potentially play this Saturday against Atlas, managed by Camilo Vargas, from 10:00 p.m. However, this will depend on coach Eduardo Berizzo.
