As soon as she leaves the Federal Council, Viola Amherd will be entitled to an annual pension of just over 239,000 francs, which corresponds to half of her current salary. This amount is reduced if she returns to gainful activity.

The pensions of former federal councilors correspond to half of the gross salary of serving magistrates. Only ministers who retire after at least four years or for health reasons are entitled to the full pension.
The federal decree on the salaries of magistrates provides that they must not earn more on retirement than their colleagues in office.
Thus, former ministers who decide to engage in gainful activity or who sit on boards of directors must return to the Confederation what they earn more than a current magistrate. (jah/ats)
