The Red Cross is sounding the alarm over a critical shortage of blood. Every week, the latter needs 400 bags of blood to supply hospitals in the region, but current stocks are struggling to meet this demand.
Despite the efforts made to mobilize donors during the holiday period, collections are far from the objectives. This shortage is explained in particular by sustained hospital activity at the start of the year, increasing the need for transfusions.
The Carolo transfusion center also suffers from a lack of plasma donations, an essential element for treating certain pathologies.
Why and how to give?
Every donor can make a difference. On average, it is recommended to donate blood a maximum of four times a year. In Charleroi, the process is simple: you just have to go to the transfusion center. Numerous mobile collections are also organized, notably in schools, businesses, and this weekend at the Ville 2 shopping center.
Recent weather conditions have disrupted some collections, worsening the situation. The Red Cross therefore invites citizens, regular donors or not, to consult the next collection dates on the site dondesang.be.
A vital and supportive gesture
A blood donation can save up to three lives. During this critical period, each bag of blood or plasma collected contributes to maintaining an efficient healthcare system and responding to medical emergencies.
The Carolos are called to mobilize and once again demonstrate their legendary generosity. Don’t wait, make a donation and become an everyday hero.
