Brazilian João Fonseca’s remarkable victory in his opening match at a Grand Slam not only secured him a place in the second round, but also served as a symbolic accomplishment: he made the most powerful shot of the tournament to date during his match against Russian Andrey Rublev, world number 9.
The young Brazilian boasts the fastest forehand recorded at the Australian Open to date, reaching a breathtaking speed of 181 km/h. French player Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard recorded a forehand at 180 km/h, while Spanish star Carlos Alcaraz reached 178 km/h.
Fonseca’s victory marks his 14th consecutive victory. The Brazilian temporarily entered the Top 100 of the men’s rankings. “It’s my first time playing in such a big tournament, so I’m just enjoying this moment. I want to thank this incredible crowd,” the Brazilian expressed with joy.
In the second round of the Australian Open, the young Carioca will face the Italian Lorenzo Sonego, currently ranked 55th in the ATP rankings.
