Ukrainian authorities issued a national air alert on Wednesday morning, due to cruise missiles threatening several parts of the territory the day after a major attack by kyiv forces in several Russian regions.
The Air Force, on its Telegram account, spoke of missiles moving towards Kryvyï Rig, the hometown of President Volodymyr Zelensky in central Ukraine, as well as towards the regions of Cherniguiv (north), Poltava (center) and Mylovaïv (south). “A group of cruise missiles” was also detected heading towards kyiv, added the same source.
Nearly three years after the Russian assault, kyiv and Moscow have intensified their strikes in recent months and want to improve their positions before Donald Trump returns to the White House next Monday. The US president-elect has said he wants to work to stop the war as soon as he takes office.
Ukraine claimed to have carried out the “most massive” attack of the war on military and industrial installations in several regions of Russia on the night of Monday to Tuesday.
According to the Russian Defense Ministry, this attack was carried out using six American ATACMS missiles and six British Storm Shadow missiles. He assured that all the projectiles were shot down without causing any casualties.
Russia has promised a systematic response to any Western missile strike on its territory, and has threatened to target the center of kyiv or even to use its new experimental Orechnik hypersonic missile.
Putin threatens kyiv with hypersonic missile
Orechnik is a new Russian ballistic missile with a range of 3,000-5,500 km. Tested in combat conditions, it struck a target in Ukraine at 1,000 km. This missile could threaten Europe and, potentially, the west coast of the United States.
