The first French player to reach the third round of the Australian Open is Benjamin Bonzi.

The 28-year-old, who defeated David Goffin for his entry into the competition (6-1, 6-2, 7-6), wanted to confirm in the second round against Francesco Passaro.

The Italian, lucky loser after Fabio Fognini’s withdrawal, took advantage of the abandonment of Grigor Dimitrov, hit in the hip, during his first match.

After 2h10 of the match, the Frenchman finally won in four sets (6-2, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4) and reached the third round in Melbourne for the second time in his career.

In 2023, he was stopped by Alex De Minaur. This time, he will be opposed to Jiri Lehecka, who eliminated another tricolor in the person of Hugo Gaston.

The latter threw in the towel at the start of the second round (6-3, 3-1 ab).

There will be at least two French players in the third round of this 2025 edition of the Australian Open.

In addition to Benjamin Bonzi, the winner of the opposition between Quentin Halys and Arthur Fils will also have the opportunity to fight for a place in the second week.

If Ugo Humbert succeeds, there would even be a Frenchman guaranteed to be in the round of 16 since Messin would face Fils or Halys in the next round.
