ENERGY. The construction of a new 230 kV power line between Stukely-Sud and Bonsecours begins this week. The work will continue for almost two years, as commissioning is planned for November 2026.
Deforestation and development work will first take place until April. Steps related to the erection of pylons, the deployment of electrical wires and the construction of a new 23,025 kilovolt (kV) substation in Lawrenceville and Valcourt will follow.
The expansion of the Stukely substation, located on Chemin de la Diligence, is also in Hydro-Québec’s plans.
The future line will cover a distance of 20 km, including 7.5 km in the Stukely-Sud territory. It will follow a section of the current corridor for approximately 6 km, but the majority of this line will be built on a new right-of-way.
This line will replace the current obsolete 49 kV network. The latter was erected between the 1910s and 1960s. The objective is to modernize the facilities to meet the growing needs of the region.
According to Hydro-Québec spokesperson Sébastien Martineau, residents of the municipalities concerned should expect increased traffic of trucks and machinery, particularly in the spring and next summer. “This is a large-scale project and there is a risk of inconvenience caused by noise and dust,” he explains. We will direct vehicles on certain roads to reduce these inconveniences,” he explains.
The targeted arteries are routes 243 and 220, as well as range 11. In Stukely-Sud, we are talking about route 112, as well as chemins de la Diligence, des Carrières, Robert-Savage and Dufresne.
This project has been in progress since 2018. The route of the new line has been known since 2022. The dismantling of the old line will probably take place in 2028.
