Since Saturday, Mexican reinforcements have been fighting the numerous fires hitting Los Angeles, California, near the border between the two countries.

President Claudia Sheinbaum announced on Friday the dispatch of her country’s firefighters. “We are a generous and united country,” she explained, publishing on X the photo of two cargo planes on the tarmac of an airport.

“We are going to send a support team to Los Angeles, with forest fire fighters,” she detailed, recalling that “there are a lot of Mexicans in this part of the United States.”

The multiple fires that have been raging in Los Angeles for a week days, and have caused at least twenty-four deaths, have spread since Saturday to areas hitherto spared, and therefore in turn affected by evacuation instructions.

Mexico is the United States’ largest trading partner, home to at least 12 million of its nationals.

Mexicans living in the United States sent $66.5 billion to their country of origin in 2024, “which represents 3.7% of national GDP,” according to the BBVA bank.

United States President-elect Donald Trump has threatened to impose a 25% tax on Mexican imports if Mexico does not take action against drug trafficking and illegal immigration.

Ms. Sheinbaum assured that her country would maintain good relations with the United States.
