Chelsea FC have entered into preliminary discussions with Bayern Munich regarding a possible transfer for young talent Mathys Tel, with several players considered for a swap.
In a surprising turn of events, the Blues remained relatively discreet during this January transfer window, recording more speculation on departures than on the arrival of new players.
Renato Veiga is reportedly set to join Borussia Dortmund for around £12million, despite his recent move to Chelsea from FC Basel for the same fee last summer.
Borussia Dortmund aren’t the only ones wanting Chelsea players; the club are also showing an interest in Carney Chukwuemeka, who has attracted attention from Crystal Palace as well as Serie A clubs this January.
Meanwhile, Chelsea are looking for a buyer for Ben Chilwell, but are yet to find a satisfactory deal. Additionally, questions remain over the future of Christopher Nkunku, who joined Chelsea from RB Leipzig for £52m in the summer of 2023 and could play a role in negotiations with Bayern Munich over Tel.

Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano provided information on Monday, confirming that Tel is a target for Chelsea. He said on X: ‘EXCL: Chelsea have held Mathys Tel discussions with Bayern in recent days; the first contacts took place to understand his situation. Tel had a chat with Kompany ten days ago as he aspires to flourish at Bayern; Chelsea sought information on Mathys during their discussions with the German club.’

After breaking into Bayern’s first team last season with an impressive tally of ten goals and six assists, Tel was expected to have a breakout year. Initially playing as a striker before his £20 million move from Rennes, he found himself largely deployed on the left wing last season, a position largely occupied by the indomitable Harry Kane.
With the recent arrival of Michael Olise, Tel’s opportunities on the wing have further diminished, logging just 351 minutes of play under Vincent Kompany so far this season.

Later on Monday, Romano added: ‘Further updates regarding Mathys Tel and Chelsea — initial discussions about a swap have taken place, with players in discussions. Bayern have expressed interest in Christopher Nkunku’s situation at Chelsea, as reported by BILD. However, no negotiations have yet made significant progress.’
No one knows yet whether Chelsea would prefer a straight swap for Nkunku, whose value is estimated at €50 million, while Tel’s is just €30 million.
Additionally, it appears that central defender Axel Disasi could leave the club, with interest growing from Juventus. Romano shared on X: ‘Understand that Axel Disasi is expected to be omitted from the Chelsea squad tomorrow as he could leave in January. Several major clubs are already in talks regarding a potential January departure, and Chelsea are open to facilitating this following discussions with the player.’
