The new Lebanese, Joseph Aoun, began parliamentary consultations on Monday with a view to appointing a Prime Minister to form a government which will have to face major challenges in a country in crisis.
MPs began arriving at Baabda Palace to participate in these consultations.
The member of the Tajaddod bloc, MP Fouad Makhzoumi, announced on Monday that he was withdrawing his candidacy for the post of Prime Minister in favor of Judge Nawaf Salam, President of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) which sits in The Hague (Netherlands).
Mr. Makhzoumi issued a statement in which he announced his belief that having more than one opposition candidate will have a negative effect and that Lebanon needs a radical change in its system of governance.
He therefore announced the withdrawal of his candidacy for the post of Prime Minister “to pave the way for a consensus between all those who believe in the need for change around Judge Nawaf Salam, thanking the colleagues and the political forces who “gave their support and confidence” we can read in the text of the press release.
