With this acquisition, Delhaize wishes to expand its network of points of sale and thus strengthen its position in the retail market. “Delhaize wishes to make its expertise in food and fresh products available to Louis Delhaize,” declares Xavier Piesvaux, CEO of Delhaize. “We want to further develop the potential of Louis Delhaize stores and independent partner stores, experienced employees.”

Delfood’s management team and employees will be retained, as will contracts with affiliated stores.

Delhaize and Delfood are currently reviewing steps to continue the acquisition process. Further details of the transaction will not be disclosed until the buyout transaction has been approved by the Belgian Competition Authority (BCA).

Although the 2 groups have a common family origin, they developed completely independently of each other. “With this acquisition, 2 companies from the same founding family come together again after more than 150 years of existence,” explains Piesvaux.

Delhaize De Leeuw currently has 808 stores in Belgium and Luxembourg, and the acquisition will add a further 325 by the end of 2025.
