WASHINGTON – Nick Suzuki scored the game-winning goal 1:15 into overtime as the Canadiens defeated the Washington Capitals 3-2 at Capital One Arena on Friday.
Montreal, which had the upper hand 30 to 17 in terms of shots on goal, now has six victories in its last seven games.
Cole Caufield brought both teams back to square one in the second period, scoring his 23rd of the season and extending his streak of games with a goal to five. It also matched his best streak of its kind, which occurred last January, according to the NHL Public Relations Department. Later in the same period, Josh Anderson found the top corner by directing a backhand shot to make it 2-1 in favor of the Canadians after 40 minutes of play.
The Capitals quickly tied the score after intermission, forcing an eventual overtime.
In overtime, Habs captain Nick Suzuki sent both clubs to the showers after scoring his fourth overtime goal of the season, sealing the outcome of the match at the same time.
According to the League, Jakub Dobes became the seventh goalkeeper in franchise history to win his first three major league games.
