Lucas Bergvall, 18, was on the verge of deportation.

Instead, the Swede scored his first goal for Tottenham and became a big hero of the match in the 1-0 win over Liverpool.

– He should have received his second yellow card, Liverpool team captain Virgil van Dijk tells Sky Sports.

Talk about being in the center of the action.

With an early yellow card, Lucas Bergvall arrived late for a tackle on Liverpool’s Kostas Tsimikas. On the Viaplay show there was speculation that Bergvall should have received his second yellow card and therefore been sent off.

But it didn’t happen that way.

Bergvall had to stay on the field and less than a minute later he made it 1-0.

Tottenham stormed and Bergvall ran into the penalty area. There he received the ball served by Dominic Solanke and put it into the net for a goal in the 86th minute. Notably, left-back Tsimikas was not on the pitch as he was treated after Bergvall’s tackle.

Liverpool rages

Liverpool manager Arne Slot was furious and received a yellow card for his protests.

– These are not empty words, replies Slot when asked if Bergvall should have been sent off, according to The Athletic journalist James Pearce.

Slot wasn’t the only one in the Liverpool camp who was annoyed either.

Team captain Virgil van Dijk was directly in front of referee Stuart Attwell and protested.

After the match he was still upset and thought Bergvall should have been sent off before the goal.

– That’s how it is. He (the referee) was wrong in my opinion and I told him so. He thinks he didn’t do it, but it was quite obvious and everyone in the side thought it was a yellow card,” van Dijk told Sky Sports.

Bergvall is defended by Tottenham coach Ange Postecoglou.

– We were told that if the referee shows an advantage and it is not a cynical foul, the player should not be warned. It was obvious that it was like that today, he said.

The goal was Bergvall’s first for Tottenham and it was also enough to secure the 1-0 victory. The second leg of the League Cup semi-final will be played on February 6 at Anfield.
